Unable to understand the lyrics of “Mbube,” Seeger transcribed the central chant as “Wimoweh,” and that became the name of the song as recorded by the Weavers and released in early 1952, just as the group was about to be blacklisted thanks to the McCarthy hearings. That friend was the folksinger Pete Seeger. Without actually hearing any of the records in a box sent from Africa, Lomax thought a friend of his might be interested in the box’s contents. But the story might have ended there had a copy of the record not made its way to New York City in the early 1950s, where it was saved from the slush pile at Decca Records by the legendary folklorist Alan Lomax. The story begins in Johannesburg, South Africa, where in 1938, a group of Zulu singers and dancers called Solomon Linda and the Evening Birds stepped into the first recording studio ever set up in sub-Saharan Africa and recorded a song called “Mbube”-Zulu for “the lion.” “Mbube” was a regional hit, and it helped make Solomon Linda into a South African star. Long has it been since a soul has been sent to their gleaming realm, and the locals are astonished by the arrival of a living mortal. Yet Azeroth’s Champions are able to escape and soon make their way to the noble Kyrian in Bastion. But these souls will still show up as amorphous blobs in zones like Bastion, leading to an endless potential field of future possibilities hidden in an already otherworldly, mysterious zone. When Sylvanas Windrunner pierces the veil between life and death, you and your allies are pulled into the Maw, where the most wicked are damned to suffer for eternity. “Now the trick is, obviously, we don’t have character models for the 18-legged arthropods of Praxis-9,” jokes Danuser. Everyone who dies in the World of Warcraft universe goes to the Shadowlands - even creatures from planets and zones we haven’t seen or heard about yet. There’s also room for Blizzard to introduce new plot threads from, well, anywhere. Shadowlands is more focused it’s a “linear, very structured narrative arc” that focuses on one main story. Danuser admits that Battle for Azeroth was ambitious, and juggled a few too many threads. It’s an approach that requires a different way of leveling and experiencing the expansion’s story. “It’s cool to have scary parts of the world that players aspire and build towards.” That was something we thought was really cool from the older expansions, like Kazzak’s area in Hellfire Peninsula,” says Cash. “We’ve spent a lot of effort to make sure there are areas that are reserved for max-level content. Leveling in Bastion is just one part of the zone, with the player returning later to see the area from different angles - a trick Blizzard has used in the past. Blizzard built Shadowlands with a different philosophy in mind. When it comes to scale, and the time spent in a zone, Shadowlands can’t quite compare to its predecessors in Legion and Battle for Azeroth. Not all is well in Bastion Image: Blizzard Entertainment If players pledge to the Kyrian covenant, they’ll get to be a major part of that change (while also unlocking new abilities). Players are the tool to come in and change this society. They’re certainly not evil, but they are set in their ways. ![]() The team wanted the Kyrian to come across as fallible and in need of a new perspective. Why help a cool Tauren become a blue human? Isn’t that a betrayal of his fundamental nature?īlizzard wants players to think about these things, according to Danuser. Things aren’t quite as wonderful as they seem on the surface. ![]() Their society is grinding to a halt, and their once perfect set of rules simply do not work anymore. In Bastion, unintended souls are going to the Maw, which means that the Kyrian don’t have any Anima, their essential soul juice. Of course, it’s a World of Warcraft zone, so things have gone wrong, and the player has to step in. The answer is the Kyrian, a noble and majestic group of protectors and servants. “When Odyn pierced through the veil and looked into the Shadowlands, and based the Val’kyr off the creatures he saw … what did he see?” said Cash. ![]() We’ve seen some hints of a Bastion-like world before in Legion, through the Titan keeper lore. “There’s something noble and pure about this kind of afterlife.” “We felt like starting off in a place that exemplified the more idyllic or traditional, ‘ah, here’s a place I can get into and feel like I can exhale’,” says Danuser. The whole point of Shadowlands is that there isn’t just one afterlife every afterlife for every culture and people on Azeroth is both real and co-existing with other heavens and hells. In 1619, Johannes Kepler conducted the first official and documented study of tessellation art. In the 4th century, one of the most famous tessellation art was made by the Muslim Moors in Grenada, Spain: the Alhambra, an Islamic tessellation artwork composed of countless tiles in geometric positions that were constructed for the residence and court of Mohammed ibn Yusuf Ben Nasr. During the classical antiquity period in the 8th century, tessellation became a staple for mosaic tiling decorations using small square blocks called ‘tesserae.’ The Arabs, Chinese, Egyptians, Japanese, Romans, Persians, and the Moors practiced the use of repeated patterns and geometric designs in their decorative arts. It wasn’t too long until the next civilizations quickly adopted tessellation both in art and architecture. when ancient Sumerians discovered the use of clay tiles as home and temple decorations. The hexagon is the smallest geometric figure which makes the lizard tessellation possible with a single pattern. The origin of the mathematical art of creating patterns, or tessellation, dates back to 4000 B.C. We need all six triangles to make the Escher's tessellation complete. The poor beasts made from this triangle would not have limbs on the right side. Of course, we can tessellate this triangle (or any triangle cut out from original drawing) but it will not produce lizards. Let's check for example the triangle made with vertexes where all three lizards heads meet: How do we know a triangle would not suffice? Because then each triangle has to have a different pattern painted on it and we need six such triangles. You might be tempted to think a triangle would suffice to make lizards because we may divide a hexagon into six triangles. ![]() Here is a movie how to deform the hexagon to get the lizards: Remember that you can create subpatterns (smaller ones) or superpatterns (bigger ones)Īctually this lizard is created on the basis of a hexagon, not a triangle! Here is the hexagon: Here the "deformation" of the grid is extreme, the grid itself has its own new shape: But art is about taking the resources you have as a guideline, not as a limitation. You have some other resources like mirroring, rotating, and scaling. Where you can see how he used a two-axis grid rotated 45° next to a work using a three-axis grid. Here is a screen capture of the website: Let us explore how Escher used these grids to develop part of his work. When you are using a pattern, you let the pattern guide you.Įdited some years later. Metamorphosis.Īdditionally, comparing two lizards they are not exactly the same. ![]() Especially if the next lizard will turn into a duck. I would probably have a reference drawing but draw those by hand. Look at the second image, it clearly marks the middle of the triangle and where the legs should intersect them. ![]() I really see no difficulty to draw this lizard by hand. You can also see these patterns in 3D often used in Architecture. We called it "Little Squares 101" Or "Sticks and Balls II" (That was the second course) and yes, we drew this by hand. This is a typical example of introductory classes at the University. Grab a paper and a ruler, draw some pages and find some more patterns! Look how many patterns you have with this triangular grid. We are used more to a square pattern, but this triangular pattern can produce hexagonal and rhomboidal patterns as well.Īnd you can play with it to start building ripples, but still, you repeat the internal objects on this now deformed patterns. These patterns are pretty easy to draw, and they are used for example in architecture in different cultures. You can have and use sub-patterns or smaller ones to be more exact. Once you know what to draw on each piece, you need to repeat this. You may also want to check out some blue abstract graphics that might help your next project shine. Though the emphasis is, quite rightly, on fun, with technical shoddiness being part of Gang Beasts‘ quirky appeal, the problem comes when you’re asking $20 for what amounts to a low-budget, kinda-broken, party title. On an aesthetic level, there remains plenty of glitches, flickering textures, and some post-load pop-in. Numerous times hapless players would get trapped out-of-sight, leaving us all waiting out the clock, which seriously hurts the comedic flow. It has very bare presentation, with a UI, options screen, and lobby system akin to that of an in-production Alpha. It’s all part of the game’s base theory of “Entertainment first, strategy last.”Īlthough it has been in Early Access for years, the game still looks like something you’d have found on Greenlight. Walls can be climbed, railings broken, windows shattered. Everything in the arena can be clumsily manipulated. A scramble between three dudes in an elevator might end when a fourth simply yanks off the cabling, sending them all crashing to Earth. A fight on a truck might see two players roll under the wheels together, locked in a simultaneous choke-hold. In fact, the beauty in Gang Beasts‘ ugly punch-ups is in the bizarre way they evolve. It’s not unlikely to see two players repeatedly punching a third in the head, whilst they themselves dangle another player off a speeding truck by the ankles. Gang Beasts‘ pugilists have the inertia of a fool on ice, and thus slip all over the shop, swinging wildly and careening off ledges on a whim. ![]() Control is deliberately awkward, with shoulder buttons representing your arms, and the face buttons used for hugely inaccurate kicks and headbutts. ![]() The characters, practically boneless, gloop and slide around the arena with homicidal intent. Hardly Bushido Blade, the game can be considered part of the “crazy physics” genre, alongside titles like QWOP and Surgeon Simulator. This is achieved through ring-rocking brawls, as the fighters stumblefuck around the arena punching, headbutting, and slamming each other with the grace of a Saturday night 2am rumble between a pub bouncer and some guy named Terry. Its simple, no-nonsense premise sees a bunch of gelatinous, faceless characters - all of whom are fully customisable in wacky outfits - punching it out in a series of hazardous locations to be the last blob standing. It has to be said that Gang Beasts is not the most technical fighter on the market. Let’s find out if it deserves an invite to your next party. A madcap Battle Royale (in the traditional sense), Gang Beasts mixes simple-but-charismatic characters, ridiculous physics, and batshit chaos. After three long years, a fistful of patches, some redesigns, and viral videos up the wazoo, party-brawler Gang Beasts has finally left Early Access to officially unleash colourful mayhem on the world.Ĭreated by Boneloaf, a UK outfit started by three brothers, and published by Tim Schafer’s Double Fine, the multiplayer fighter is now available on PS4, PC, and Mac. |
